Real Cost

"Vegetables are too expensive."

Food for Thought:
  • You can buy the exact quantity you need.  No waste!
  • Eat vegetables when they are in season.  They're cheaper and they taste better, too!
  • Visit your local farmers' market to score great deals and discover new veggies.
  • Grow your own.  Studies show that kids who see vegetables growing in a garden eat 2-3 servings more per day than their peers.  Try a little pot of chive on a windowsill!
  • Don't forget to calculate the sales tax when you're making comparisons.  In Wisconsin, produce is not taxed, but prepared meals and candy bars are.

Here is a comparison of two items I found at my grocery store last week:

Reeses Peanut Butter Cups
$1.05 ($1.00 plus 5¢ tax) for a 2-pack
Price per serving = $1.05 (1 serving/package)
210 calories (110 cal from FAT); 150 mg sodium; 21g sugar

Green Giant Grape Tomatoes
$1.49 (no tax) for a 10-ounce package
Price per Serving = 43¢ (3.5 servings/package)
25 calories (0 cal from fat); 0 mg sodium; 1 g sugar

Eat the whole package of grape tomatoes you only spent a 44¢ more!
87.5 calories; 0 mg sodium; 3.5 g sugar
